AUSTIN, Texas—Nuclear Energy for Texans (NET) announced its full support for Dallas-based Luminant’s application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to expand its Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant near Glen Rose, Texas. The application was filed on September 19, 2008 with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
“This is the first step toward another asset to serve Texas’ need for new electricity generation, NET president, Tom Forbes, said. “Nuclear power is safe, clean and reliable and an important part of the electric generation needs for Texas.”
Additional nuclear power is needed to meet the state's need for electricity, which grows by as much as 2 percent a year.
Earlier this month, Exelon Corporation, the largest U.S nuclear operator, filed an application to build a two-reactor plant in Victoria County, Texas.
Texas is expecting a surge in electricity demand over t he next 20 years as the population continues to expand. Independent studies show that the need for power in the state is expected to grow 48 percent by 2030. NET’s membership of civic, business, academic and public leaders supports the development of new nuclear generation which must be a part of our state’s energy mix as we move into the 21st century.
